Jim O'Leary

Jim O'Leary joined YMAA in 1985 and is one of the handful of fully-qualified YMAA Taijiquan Instructors (2nd degree). He has also earned the rank of Assistant Instructor in YMAA Shaolin. Jim is one of Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming's disciples and served as Dr. Yang’s primary editor on over a dozen books. For many years, Jim taught adult Shaolin Kung-Fu classes at YMAA Boston.
Jim is well-versed in the Taijiquan Fighting Set, Pushing Hands, Taiji Sword (solo and with a partner), Taiji Saber (solo and with a partner), and Qigong. He is also very knowledgeable of Shaolin Long Fist, martial applications, saber, and staff. Jim has competed in several competitions, including the renowned "A Taste of China" competition, the United States National Chinese Martial Arts Competition, and the U.S.A. Wushu Kung-Fu Federation Nationals, winning medals in Pushing Hands in 1992, 1994, and 1998. Today, he often helps to teach classes led by YMAA Instructor Jeffrey Pratt. His other interests include kettlebell, yoga, cooking, gardening, and reading.
Outside of YMAA, Jim is married with 2 children, and has been a practicing attorney since 1993.
