Scott Tarbell, a resident of Amesbury, has studied a variety of martial arts throughout his life, beginning with Karate at the age of 8. Today, he holds many qualifications in addition to his YMAA training:

  • 3rd degree Black Belt in San Chai Na Shaolin Kempo Karate
  • 1st degree Black Belt in Modern Arnis
  • Advanced Rank in Olympic Style Tae Kwan Do
  • Black Sash in Pien San Turning style Wing Chun Kung Fu
  • first person in New England to receive rank and title of "Primary Technician - Black Sash" in Wing Tsun Kung Fu

Scott has been training Submission Wrestling and No-Gi Grappling since 1997. A few years back Scott joined Brazilian Top Team to study No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under 2nd degree Black Belt Daniel Gazoni. Scott was granted permission to officially teach No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2007 independently from his instructor Mr. Gazoni.

Scott also currently studies and assists in Shaolin Long Fist, Shaolin White Crane, and Yang Style Taijiquan classes held in YMAA Andover. On Saturdays, he also assists the kids classes at YMAA Boston, YMAA International Headquarters.

In total, Scott has over 20 years of training experience and has devoted the past 9 years to teaching various styles of martial arts.

A graduate of Salem State College, Scott holds a B.S. in Psychology with a double minor in Sociology and Human Biology. He also earned a Masters degree in Special Education.

Scott and his wife Ayako are the proud parents of their daughter Safiya Meekah their son Jonah Takuma, and their other "babies," a cat named Xiang Mao and a pug named Cujo.

Scott spends his free time studying Japanese language, culture, and history, researching and training all aspects of martial arts in Japan every summer, and researching Sport Psychology and Philosophy. Scott is very dedicated to his daily training of Qigong and Zen meditation, as well as expanding his collection of oldies and classic rock albums.

Scott is a Behavioral Specialist Special Education Teacher at Haverhill High School and the director of YMAA Amesbury.
