Qin-Na
Overview
Qin-Na: The seizing and locking art of Kung-Fu
YMAA Boston – Boston, MA – July 12th and 13th, 2008
Qin-Na (Chin Na) means "Seize and Control" and is one of the four major elements of any martial arts training (kicking, punching, wrestling, Qin-Na). It comprises of techniques specializing in joint locks, cavity press, and muscle/tendon grabs to subdue and control opponents. The successful execution of any Qin-Na technique relies heavily on skill and practice, as proper angling, timing, application of pressure and leverage are all essential keys to making it effective. The material taught in this seminar is readily incorporated into other martial styles and systems.
Shaolin Qin Na and Taiji Qin Na differ in several ways including:
- Shaolin Qin Na is harder while Taiji Qin Na is softer, implying that Shaolin Qin Na uses more muscle while Taiji Qin Na uses more Qi
- Shaolin Qin Na emphasizes both straight and round movements, while Taiji Qin Na is usually only round
- Relatively speaking, Shaolin Qin Na is more offensive and aggressive, while Taiji Qin Na is more defensive and passive
Seminar/Workshop Program
The Shaolin Qin-Na program is divided into 6 levels. Attending one level per seminar season is strongly recommend. Each level contains more than 15 techniques that require much time and practice to make them effective. In the first 5 levels, you will be targeting the fingers, wrist, elbow, shoulder, neck, and waist areas. In Level 6, leg Qin-Na and applications are discussed, as well as Qin Na counterattack techniques.
The Taiji Qin Na program is divided into 4 different levels. In Taiji Qin Na Levels 1 and 2, more than 16 techniques (per level) are taught with the "crossed hands" setup. It resembles the initial scenario of Taiji Pushing Hands (Taiji Tui Shou). Level 3 discusses the "parallel hands" setup while Level 4 is focused primarily on elbow sticking techniques (Na).
Who's Teaching?
Nicholas Yang will be teaching Level 1 Qin-Na. He is a qualified Shaolin Instructor and also the director of YMAA Boston. Higher levels will be taught by senior Qin-Na instructors Jim Noble, Paul Green, and Aaron Damus who have all studied with Dr. Yang for several years.
